Where is our attention span?
Lost it playing a game of charades
As the clock lost its minute hand
Betting it all on a game of spades
So for an eye for another eye
Turning it another shade of blue
So as time slips rapidly by
Who would say what we should do?
How wrong could we have been?
Thought we held a winning hand
Was it just an awful sin?
Wrong-footed in a marching band
Losing our mind counting our toes
What’s the matter with the sea?
Was it like anything goes?
When you’re up in a tree
Could we have been half asleep?
Just another hallucination?
Of sounds from the deep
Kind of like a hard fascination
We can’t escape from the karma
A notice from the universe
Without any aid from big Pharma
Tornadoes worse than an airburst
Out on a limb, on thin ice
And at the end of a rope
Have to think about it thrice
‘Cause they’ve run out of hope
Father, mother, son & daughter
Helpless & haplessly floundering
Like leaves in wind & water
Stunned as if after a laundering
If they only see the volcanoes
As if it were their destiny
They’re passing like shadows
More like a coda to infinity
In the hinterlands’ waste
Pity and poverty lay side by side
Leaving behind a bitter taste
In the wake of its coincide
Hummingbirds dance a fandango
In a romantic interlude
While serpents do the tango
To interrupt would be rude
And the questions that we ask
Hang naked on the line
Awaiting a different task
What have we got in mind?
What of the freedom’s gifting?
All your memories unwind
Ships at anchor are drifting
Wake up and take a look around
Living beyond with a bit of soul
Trapesing over holy ground
With things way past control
For all that caused the animosity
From sea to shining sea
Creating another monstrosity
Aching to be roam free
